I agree with you for the most part.

However, there is some video game kids are playing in cybercafes where they actually jump out of their chairs and physically attack each other. The game is one where kids take the parts of different animal characters that fight each other.

Did you write out a lesson plan for the sub?

Also, assign a child who knows the activity to be in charge of it, to “help” the sub. On your lesson plans for the sub, say, “Do xxx activity, and ‘John’ can help you with that.” Then do “yyy activity, and ‘Lisa’ can help you with that.” I’m sure most subs would be happy to have help like this (I subbed for a couple years at many different schools, so I know what I’m talking about).

like maybe learn some grammar and how to actually spell… “My” is not spelled “MI” it’s the same amount of letters, so what’s the point of typing “MI” instead of “MY” unless you’re trying to look cool. Let me just tell you it only makes you look stupid, hon. And stupid is not cool.

I think this is just unbelievable! What I think is that anyone who wants to go to university in England, America, or anywhere else is going to be out of luck, because they’ll never be able to pass the university entrance exams in writing. I think this is a REAL disservice to students to let them get by with this (probably starting in elementary school).

I don’t think the ban of “junk food” will solve the obesity problem. I don’t think it’s so much what the children eat these days as it is what they do (or don’t do) concerning physical activity. I’m only 21 but I feel that my childhood differs greatly from the children growing up today. I remember always being outside, running around, riding bikes, never sitting down to watch TV, play video games, and the Internet wasn’t even around then (well, not something many people had access to anyway). But today, it seems that more and more kids come home from school, grab snacks and sit in front of the TV or computer. I think more of the blame should fall more on less physical activity than the junk food. Just my opinion though. A lot of my cousins are young and don’t eat that healthy but they play sports and are always running around so they’re in good shape. Junk food isn’t bad as long as it’s eaten in moderation. Diets never work unless there is some kind of exercise going along with it.

These types of studies are highly flawed because they show only associations and not causal links. Otherwise, you could put any kid in a room, play violent video games and they would immediately go out an do a violent act. What’s also missing is that there are a lot of other factors in behavior and the studies don’t norm out for these things.

Otherwise you could take identical twins separated at birth and the one who played violent games would become violent and the other wouldn’t.

I totally agree that the focus needs to be on making healthy choices, but I also feel that by providing healthy options in the cafeteria, schools model for children how they can make healthy choices. I’m not saying take junk food out totally, but I am saying to make sure there are plenty of healthy alternatives for children, and teach them to make good choices for meals and snacks.

I totatlly agree with the points that you bring about in your arguement about the lack of privacy that we face in today’s digital world. It is very interesting that you compare it to “1984″, because we may, one day find ourselves living in that type of world where we are constantly watched and monitored. It is kind of scary to think about, but really not that far-fetched.

This effort to rid “junk food” from the schools annoys me. While students need to make healthy decisions when it comes to food, they should still have the opportunity to recieve junk food. Some might think my thinking is rather absurd and that my philosphy is the reason for obsesity but let me explain otherwise.

Everyday we are forced to make decisions. We learn new information and must use the infromation, regardless if it is good information or bad information, to the best of our ability. Junk food, for example, is one of the many food items that exists in the this world. Just like drugs, alcohol, sex, and morals, we can encourage students and teach them to make the right decisions, but we can not ultimately say to them you may not have or use what is available to them. Students need exposure to the “real world.” Junk food exist and will not kill a person as long as they eat junk food in moderation.
